How I Embraced Transition

February 8, 2016

It has been exactly one year to this date since I moved to Denver, Colorado. I was all ready for a new adventure after New York City and was excited for all God had in store.  Once I was moved here, I felt that I was exactly where He needed me to be, so I felt safe and that I could make Colorado my new home. God saw me through this transition, but it was not without its challenges. Through the past year, I learned a lot about myself and who God created me to be. I realized I needed to set standards in my life that would help me to embrace the changes to come.

1. I found community.

When I was preparing to graduate college, I met with my illustration professor to talk about my future plans. One thing he encouraged me to do once I moved was to find a good church. He knew that I would find myself alone and that I would need to surround myself with like-minded people. I tried a couple of churches in Denver but realized I desired one that felt more like home to me. Through some incredible people, God has brought me to a place where I feel like I belong. Not only have I found community through church, but I have also had the opportunity to meet amazing people through my jobs.

2. I stopped setting high expectations.

Having expectations lead to anxiety and disappointment. When I moved to New York City, I had expectations for the next few years there. I expected to thrive there and have everything figured out. God began to close doors there and I realized that things weren’t going to work out the way I thought. As I moved to Denver, I worked on not expecting things to be a certain way. I worked on being flexible and living in the present. It’s not easy setting aside my expectations. What I remember is that I need to give all of my problems over to the one who cares for me.

3. I focused on seeking God’s will.

Once I began to not set high expectations for my life, that opened up a way for me to trust God’s plan for me. He has placed me where I am for a reason. I would have missed out on so many blessings if I had remained so focus on what I wanted and thought I needed.

Going through transition is hard. Change is inevitable in life and it’s important to remember that the one who never changes is in control of your life. God places you where you are for a reason. What’s important is to look to Him as you look to the future. Trust that He will provide for you and enjoy the life He has given you.

We’ve all gone through transitions in our lives. What have you done to face the challenges in your life?
